Donald B. Johnson Riverfront Park

History

Donald B. Johnson Riverfront Park was purchased from the Johnson family in 2019. The 10 acre property is located on the riverfront on the southwest side of Byron. A portion of the purchase was paid by a grant from the National Park Service’s Land and Water Conservation Fund, which was awarded through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Through an Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Open Space Land and Development (OSLAD) grant the site was further developed in 2022 and 2023. Additions included a playground, parking lots, sidewalks, asphalt and natural trails, a picnic shelter, a fishing station, and a river overlook area.
